Hold fast the form of sound words... in faith and love.
II Timothy 1:13
DEFINITIONS ARE IN REFERENCE TO THE OVERALL BIBLICAL USAGE OF THE TERMS
LAW: God’s unchanging nature of absolute unselfishness. Loving others as one’s self. (God’s nature as expressed in law was progressively codified from the time of Adam - Gen. 2:6-17, 3:11, to Abraham - Gen. 26:5, and finally to Moses - Exodus 20:1-11ff; it was then personified to the utmost by Christ - Matthew 5:17, Romans 3:21-26.) SIN: Selfishness in disposition, desire, or deed. Loving self more than others. (It is a transgression of the law - I John 3:4.) RIGHTEOUSNESS: Unselfishness in disposition, desire or deed. That which con- forms to the moral nature of God. LOVE: Regarding the well-being of others, as much as, or more than your own. Fulfilling of the law. HOLY: Separate from sin, set apart. Singularly devoted to divine interests. MERCY: Not requiring the payment that is due. Not giving or receiving the punishment that is deserved. GRACE: Freely-given favor, even unto enablement. Giving or receiving something that is good and undeserved. FAITH: Ascribing credit to something or someone, and acting on it. Belief that is acted upon. Biblically speaking, one does not truly believe unless he acts on it. HOPE: Confident expectation of a particular outcome. Desire accompanied by anticipation. HEART: Inward source of what one is thinking, feeling, and wanting. The inner- most awareness that results from the collective input of the intellect, will and emo- tions. (Same as the Biblical usage of the term “mind,” with an emphasis on the emotions.) GLORY: Two separate ideas: 1) A showing forth of who and what someone is (often in the form of light as used by God to demonstrate His presence); 2) Credit given with praise to someone for who they are, or for what they have done. JOY: An inward sense of delight. Contentedness not subject to temporal circum- stance, but rather the Spirit’s inward ministry upon the heart. |
